BRAZIL: New Health Scare from Decades-Old Disease

Mario Osava

RIO DE JANEIRO, Nov 28 2005 (IPS) – Brazil, the world s largest exporter of chicken, has been making efforts to ease fears that bird flu could spread to Latin America. But closer to home than the H5N1 virus that has decimated flocks and killed dozens of people in Asia is the scare caused by the reemergence of spotted fever, a rare tick-borne disease with a high mortality rate.
Although the disease is nothing new for doctors, many Brazilians heard of it for the first time this month when three people died after staying in a hotel in Petrópolis, a mountain retreat about an hour away from Rio de Janeiro, in October.

The incident has had repercussions for tourism in the city, the summer residence of Brazil s emperors and aristocrats in the 19th century, and t…

UNITED NATIONS, Jan 9 2006 (IPS) – The United States, a major funder of the United Nations and its myriad agencies, has a longstanding notoriety for exercising its financial clout to threaten U.N. bodies refusing to play ball with Washington.
Back in 1984, it withdrew from the Paris-based U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), citing disagreement over its management, and also opposing a proposed plan for the creation of a new international information order.

The withdrawal resulted in a substantive 25 percent U.S. cut in UNESCO s annual 180-million-dollar budget. But despite the sharp cut, UNESCO continued to survive minus the United States. In 2003, however, Washington returned to the fold, arguing it could live with the then new…

HEALTH-SOUTH AFRICA: Ablution Facilities for the Homeless “Essential”

Moyiga Nduru

JOHANNESBURG, Feb 16 2006 (IPS) – Johannesburg is the financial heart of South Africa, and for those who gain a share of the city s wealth, affluent homes await.
Far less fortunate is Johannesburg s homeless population, variously put at between 500,000 to 800,000 people. In all, there are some 3.2 million people in the city, according to official figures.

The homeless move about a lot, so it s difficult to keep record, Ndai Mncedisi, director of the Johannesburg-based Paballo ya Batho, a homeless outreach programme administered by the Methodist Church, told IPS. (Paballo ya Batho is a Sotho name which translates as Caring for the People .)

Those without homes still …
